President Biden’s State of the Union Address

(Speaker Johnson receives the President’s prepared remarks.)

Tony! Thank you. Looking for Jill.

Good evening. Good evening. If I were smart, Iโ€™d go home now.

Mr. Speaker, Madam Vice President, members of Congress, my fellow Americans.

In January 1941, Franklin Roosevelt came to this chamber to address the nation. He stated, โ€œI address you at a moment unprecedented in the history of the Unionโ€. Hitler was advancing. War was ravaging Europe.

President Roosevelt aimed to rouse Congress and awaken the American people to the gravity of the situation. Freedom and democracy were under siege worldwide.

Tonight, I stand before this chamber to speak to the nation. Now, it is we who confront an unparalleled moment in our nation’s history.

And, indeed, my intention tonight is to shake Congress into awareness and to inform the American people that this is no ordinary moment. Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War have freedom and democracy faced such threats within our own borders as they do today.
