Why Does Pronouns Make You Mad?
Pronouns are a little like the weather: you can’t predict them, but you can change your reaction to them.
When you’re talking about someone or something in the third person, like “he” or “she,” it’s easy to get upset when they’re referred to as “he” or “she.” But if you know what pronouns are and why they matter, it’s not so hard to see why people get upset.
Pronouns are words like “I” and “you.” A pronoun takes the place of a noun. So if I tell you that I’m going to the store, my sentence is fine without me saying who I’m going to the store with: I’m going alone (or by myself). But if I tell you that I’m going with John, suddenly my sentence is weird: He’s not even there! We need him to be there too!
So how do we fix this problem? By using pronouns! If we start using sentences like He went by himself, that makes it clear that he went on his own and not with someone else—which means that he wasn’t actually there with John after all!
Why does pronouns make you mad?
Because they’re the first thing that gets in your way.
For most people, pronouns are one of the first things they learn as a child—and they’re also one of the most difficult things to remember. They can be confusing and frustrating, especially when you have to figure out which one goes with which noun.
But maybe that’s not such a bad thing. Maybe it takes a little extra effort to keep track of those pesky pronouns…because that means you’re working harder than someone who doesn’t have to worry about them!
